Training Programs and Content Developed by EU Stakeholders

Solar Finance Database

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) aims to build a collaborative platform for increased deployment of solar energy technologies as a means to providing energy access, ensuring energy security, and to driving the energy transition within ISA member countries.  Such transitions not only require significant investments into technology and infrastructure, but also into capability building to implement and manage the forthcoming transition.  Capacity building ensures the availability of a skilled workforce capable of implementing and managing sustainable energy projects at various stages of the life cycle.

Academic collaborations across borders help share knowledge, best practices, and experiences related to the energy transition.  To enable member countries take advantage of such benefits, ISA has compiled a list of training programs and workshops developed and implemented by EU stakeholders: private sector, foundations, NGOs, academia, universities, research centers, etc.

The database (link) contains information on training programs developed by EU-based stakeholders, focusing where relevant, on “training trainers” programs and considering possible synergies with the requirements of ISA member countries in Africa, Latin America and in the Asia-Pacific regions.  This database of training programs and workshops that have been conducted in the past, including a listing of the training content available online (both free-of-charge and paid content) on solar technology, storage, solar installations, PV financing, and other aspects of PV technology deployment and markets.  The list also provides contact details of organizations that offer such training.

Disclaimer:
This compilation of training programs was prepared with the financial assistance of the European Commission. The listing of training programs and workshops is the work of the consultants and is not the work of the European Commission. This list is “work-in-progress” and is therefore not exhaustive and is verified as of 31July2023. To offer suggestions or to raise queries relating the content or to add information relating to Solar PV related training programs, please write to ISA person concerned @ email.org

Photovoltaic solar energy

This course is an introduction to the applications of photovoltaic (PV) conversion in the general context of the energy mix dominated by the consequences of global warming.
The different forms of using solar energy are first presented before briefly describing the principle of the direct conversion of solar radiation into electricity (PV).
The various PV technologies are described in the current context of the dominance of the crystalline silicon industry. The prospects for these sectors are then analysed in terms of R&D investments.
From a more scientific point of view, the basics of solar cell operation are approached from the characteristics of the solar spectrum. The basics of conversion are summarized. In particular, the various sources of conversion efficiency limitation are described.
The PV system, from the cell to the electrical network, is also treated with particular emphasis on taking account of intermittency with the issues in terms of network management and storage.

Silicon thin films solar cells

This course presents solar cells based on thin layers of silicon, a disordered material.

After a brief description of the operation of solar cells, thin film semiconductors are presented. The general properties of disordered semiconductors are very different from single crystals, especially in terms of band structure and doping mechanism.

Thin layers of silicon, generally less than a micron in thickness, are deposited from a silane plasma which leads to the incorporation of hydrogen. The growth mechanisms are discussed, in particular the possibility of preparing partially crystalline thin films which consist of a mixture of nanocrystals bound by an amorphous tissue.

The consequences on the operation of solar cells are analysed. The optical properties of the amorphous and nanocrystalline layers appear very complementary. Plasma processes are therefore well suited to the preparation of multi-junctions with conversion yields of the order of 13-15%. In addition, plasma processes allow deposition on large surfaces of glass or flexible substrates.

Physics of silicon solar cells

The MOOC "Photovoltaic solar energy" is a general presentation of photovoltaic (PV) technologies in the global energy context, without presenting the technological details of PV.

On the contrary, this MOOC allows a detailed understanding of the properties of solar cells based on crystalline semiconductors. It consists of a general presentation of the physics of PV components with particular emphasis on silicon technology, which represents more than 90% of the current market. PV applications of III-V semiconductors are also mentioned.

Indeed from a fundamental point of view a solar cell can be considered as an electronic component, a diode, exposed to the sun. The basic elements of semiconductor physics are first recalled, followed by a study of electronic transport in a diode. The detailed operation of a solar cell is then presented as well as the limits of solar conversion. An analysis of the solar spectrum as well as the optical properties of the cells is also provided. Finally, crystalline silicon technology is described from the growth of ingots to the preparation of heterojunctions which combine crystalline and amorphous silicon.

Building Integrated Photovoltaics: Demo sites overview

A varied range of innovative BIPV products have been installed on six real demonstrators in five different European locations and climate conditions. An important barrier for BIPV market uptake comes from the lack of familiarity from the construction industry with regards to the installation and maintenance procedures associated with BIPV. Alongside the pilot demonstration activities PVSITES project organised a series of training workshops and guided tours at the PVSITES demo sites.

These interactive events spotlighted the different aspects of the BIPV installation performed at each demo site and offered participants a unique opportunity to learn about PVSITES results, BIPV products, installation, design, application and safety considerations. Each workshop was followed by a guided tour through the different highlights of the BIPV installation in each of the six demo sites.

Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL7) has been demonstrated, meaning that the BIPV products developed should perform appropriately in their intended operational environments.
