The Scaling Solar Applications for Agricultural Use (SSAAU) programme by ISA is revolutionising rural communities through decentralised solar solutions. We focus on solar-powered irrigation systems, agrivoltaics, solar drying, solar home and street lighting systems, solar chilling, and other off-grid applications that can transform rural living.
Our Approach
Our success is built on a unique methodology that sets us apart from conventional agricultural and rural needs assessments. We have a network of technology partners dedicated to developing tailored solutions for rural communities. Our streamlined tendering, documentation, and procurement processes ensure efficiency at every stage of the project. We are constantly exploring innovations to enhance our decentralised solar applications and developing common standards for testing, monitoring, and certification.
Solar Water Pumps (SWPs) demand aggregated
Countries engaged
Approved for deployment
SSAAU has aggregated demand for 2,76,277 Solar Water Pumps (SWPs) across 24 ISA Member Countries. Expressions of interest for Solar Powered Irrigation Systems have been received, with feasibility studies underway in Niger, Ethiopia, Cuba, Fiji, and Comoros to identify viable sites and develop project pipelines. Demonstration projects on solar water pumping and solar cold storage systems have been completed in countries including Togo, Jamaica, Seychelles, Tonga, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Cuba, Senegal, Gambia, and Bhutan. Under the UN Office for South-South Cooperation, USD 2 million has been approved for pilot SWP projects in 10 countries, implemented by UNDP. ISA has also partnered with IWMI on solar energy initiatives and programmes.
We are proud to share our success stories. Projects on solar water pumping and solar cold storage have been successfully completed in Togo, Jamaica, Seychelles, Tonga, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Cuba, Senegal, The Gambia, and Bhutan, with ongoing work underway in other countries.
We believe in empowering our stakeholders. That's why we offer accessible training courses and e-learning for those involved in our projects. We've developed and shared e-handbooks on SWPs and SHLs with countries for knowledge dissemination. So far, 1082 individuals from more than 50 countries have been trained under the SSAAU program. Webinar on Agrivoltaics attracted 150 participants from 58 countries creating interest in the new solar applications
