ISA Programme

Scaling Solar Mini Grids

about-image

Solar mini-grids serve the energy needs of ISA Member Countries that lack, or have limited, grid connectivity. These countries have ample potential for solar energy harnessing and can benefit from existing solutions to advance universal energy access, lower electricity costs, and reduce tariffs. ISA is helping achieve these goals within a defined timeframe through the introduction and promotion of solar mini-grids.

Our Approach

Building Energy Access Where Connectivity Ends

The initiative focuses primarily on addressing the energy needs of ISA LDCs, SIDS, and identified areas in Member Countries that lack, or have limited, grid connectivity. It emphasises the adoption of common methodologies, policies, and procedures for preparing assessment reports. Capacity building and training of stakeholders are key components aimed at enhancing local capabilities. The initiative also aims to design and adopt successful models for the large-scale deployment of solar mini-grids, facilitating project implementation across these regions.

Latest Achievements

Latest Achievements

The initiative has received Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from ISA Member Countries looking to join the programme. Currently, efforts are underway to assist Ethiopia in developing bankable solar mini-grid projects following the assessment of three sites. Additionally, ongoing assessments of solar mini-grid sites are progressing in six countries: Guinea, Fiji, Uganda, Malawi, Burkina Faso, and Somalia.

Impact, Outcomes and Success Stories

Impact, Outcomes and Success Stories

ISA supports its Member Countries in areas such as policy and regulatory support, and the preparation of bankable detailed project reports. Discussions are underway to facilitate support for project implementation.

Training, Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing

In the past year, our efforts have significantly impacted global solar energy initiatives. We conducted online technical training programmes, educating 479 professionals from 40 Member Countries. Our work culminated in the ISA–G20 report, Roadmap of Solar Energy for Universal Energy Access, which was unveiled at the G20 Ministers’ Meeting in July 2023. Additionally, we developed an e-handbook for solar mini-grids and distributed it to all Member Countries, furthering our commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
