GGI-OSOWOG: A Global Solar Power Network
The GGI-OSOWOG initiative, a merger of India's OSOWOG and the UK's Green Grids Initiative, connects 140 countries to a continuous solar power network, enhancing the viability of solar projects and contributing to the Paris Agreement targets. It also promises economic benefits and a significant reduction in carbon emissions. The OSOWOG initiative was highlighted at the Fifth Meeting of the ISA Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific Region. ISA organized a high-level dialogue at the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial and 8th Mission Innovation meeting, emphasizing collaboration, political commitment, technological innovation, and robust infrastructure for a sustainable global energy transition.
Progress and Actions
ISA is actively progressing towards its vision, leveraging intergovernmental support to overcome challenges. With support from the World Bank, a consortium led by France’s EDF is conducting technical studies for pilot interconnections. Progress has been made in India and globally, with collaborations extending to Sri Lanka, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. A regulatory framework for inter-regional connections is anticipated soon. ISA is actively engaging in intergovernmental discussions to pave the way for successful OSOWOG implementation.
